Codex Themes: A Practical Guide to Customizing the Desktop App

Understand native Codex themes, choose a readable palette, import safely, and know when an external Skin tool is a different risk class.

Quick answer

Codex App supports native appearance customization in Settings. You can choose a base theme, adjust accent, background, and foreground colors, change UI and code fonts, and share a custom theme. Native themes stay inside that appearance system. They are the right first choice when your goal is color, contrast, or typography rather than a new background engine.

This guide was reviewed on July 17, 2026 against Codex App build 26.707.72221 on macOS. Product behavior can change, so compare the verified date on a theme with your installed version.

What a native theme changes

A native share string records a light or dark variant, a supported code-highlighting family, surface and foreground colors, an accent, contrast, fonts, and semantic colors for added lines, removed lines, and skills. It does not install scripts, open a debugging port, replace application files, or add a full-window wallpaper.

That boundary matters. A native theme is data interpreted by Codex. A Skin tool is external software with its own installation, update, and restore process.

How to read this catalog

Every theme page shows mode, palette, tested platform, Codex build, verified date, source, and license. The preview is a deterministic palette study. It is deliberately not presented as a screenshot of the app.

All twenty-four themes are free to browse, copy, and import. No payment or account is required.

A safe workflow

  1. Start with a theme that matches your preferred light or dark mode.
  2. Read the verified build and platform before importing.
  3. Keep your current appearance easy to restore.
  4. Import the native share string through Codex Appearance settings.
  5. Check normal text, muted text, selections, diffs, and code blocks.
  6. Restart Codex and confirm the choice persists.
  7. If readability is poor, restore a built-in theme before trying another.
